With population of more than 200,000, Jalalabad is the second-largest city in eastern Afghanistan as well as the center of its social and business activity. Located at the junction of the Kabul River and Kunar River near the Langhman valley, Jalalabad is the capital of Nangarhar province.
The town is surrounded by a large irrigated plain, producing fruit, almonds, rice and grain. Light industries include a sugarcane refinery, papermaking industry and handicraft shops. An urban modernization program to improve water system and pave the roads has been undertaken. It is one of the leading trading centers with Pakistan and India.
Jalalabad is a military center and a winter resort.
