The project supports World Banks studies to better understand the extensive urban growth in the metropolitan areas in South Asia.
The project follows up its successful precursor EOWORLD, mapping of metropolitan cities in Bangladesh and India. Now, the focus moved to other metropolitan cities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The service case requested aims to contribute to World Bank activities in selected four metropolitan areas in the region by generating land use mapping products with focus on urban expansion, its spatial and temporal patterns and land use change dynamics.
In the frame of EOWORLD2 project detail land cover and land cover change in cities of Colombo (Sri Lanka), Chittagong (Bangladesh), Jalalabad (Afghanistan) and Karachi (Pakistan) was carried out.

Karachi is the largest and most populous metropolitan city of Pakistan and its main seaport and financial center, as well as the capital of Sindh province. The city has an estimated population of 23.5 million people as of 2011 and a density of nearly 6,000 people per square kilometer.
Colombo is the largest city and the commercial, industrial and cultural capital of Sri Lanka. It is located on the west coast of the island and adjacent to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte suburb, the legislative capital of Sri Lanka. Colombo is a busy and vibrant place with a population of about 750,000 in the City proper.

Chittagong is the main seaport and second largest city of Bangladesh. It is located at the estuary of the Karnaphuli River in south-eastern Bangladesh. The city proper has an estimated population over 4 million people, while Greater Chittagong metropolitan area has a population of 6.5 million. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the world.
With population of more than 200,000, Jalalabad is the second-largest city in eastern Afghanistan as well as the center of its social and business activity. Located at the junction of the Kabul River and Kunar River near the Langhman valley, Jalalabad is the capital of Nangarhar province.
This project consists of 2 services to enable an understanding of urban fabric developments in the AOIs.
